About the photographer

Inspired by a lifetime of travel and a deep love for the Earth, Kate Dougherty creates photographs that are a testament to the planet's raw, untamed beauty and diversity. Her work captures the quiet details often overlooked, the minimalist scenes of coastal environments, and the ethereal glow of the night sky.

Originally from Philadelphia, Dougherty’s journey has led her to the Great Wall of China, the Atacama Desert, and many other destinations. Her photographs have been selected for juried exhibitions and published in Colorado Outdoors Magazine. She is currently based in the Greater Philadelphia area.

Artist's statement

My work is an invitation to pause and truly see the intricate beauty of the natural world. I believe we live inside an ever-changing art installation—a "canvas" continually reshaped by light, shadow, weather, and the seasons. Through my lens, I aim to capture the raw energy and quiet stillness of this living landscape.

My choice of color is a deliberate part of the narrative. I use monochrome to highlight the fundamental shapes, patterns, and emotions of a scene, stripping away distraction to focus on the core of the image. Other times, I embrace vibrant colors that are essential to the story, from the fiery hues of a sunset to the ethereal glow of the night sky.

Inspired by the power of the ocean, the salty scent of coastal wetlands, and the solitude of alpine environments, my goal is to evoke a sense of wonder and deep connection with the Earth and the night sky. My photographs are a celebration of our planet's wild diversity and a personal expression of my commitment to its preservation.
